Beach and driftwood at Miracle Beach
|
An ideal spot for a family vacation, Miracle Beach Provincial Park is a wonderful summer park and campground. Located midway between Courtenay and Campbell River on the east coast, Miracle Beach is one of the most popular parks on Vancouver Island.
While anytime is ideal for dipping your toes in the ocean, the broad safe sandy beach is perfect for sandcastle building or studying the marine life of tidal pools.
Forest trails thread through the second-growth forest of Douglas-fir, Western Hemlock and Western Red Cedar, home to many birds and animals. Red squirrels, black-tailed deer and raccoons can be found around the campground.
A great family recreational park
|
Black Creek meanders through the park on its way to the Strait of Georgia, providing an important staging area for Brant Geese in the Black Creek estuary in the early spring. A leisurely walk northward along the driftwood-strewn beach will bring you to this wildlife viewing area on Elma Bay.
There are 201 large private camping units. Reservations are accepted and first-come, first-served sites are also available.
All amenities, including showers, flush and pit toilets, a sani-station, adventure playground and access for the disabled are found within the park. The Visitor Centre and Nature House has saltwater aquariums, nature displays and offers interpretive learning programs in an open-air amphitheatre during summer. Brochures are provided for self-guided nature walks through the park.
Miracle Beach Provincial Park is open all year. Fees are collected for services from May 14 to September 30. There is a winter fee with nil services provided, which is charged from October 1 to April 30. Campers must be self-sufficient and user maintained.
Wide sandy beaches make for good ocean swimming. The beach has rocky areas with barnacles and shells; footwear is recommended. The most popular swimming area is located at the south beach day-use area. There are no lifeguards on duty at provincial parks.
Familiarize yourself with ocean currents prior to canoeing or kayaking in this area. The nearest boat launches are located north of the park at Pacific Playgrounds and Salmon Point Resort, within 10 km. Miracle Beach is a very popular destination during the summer – campsites reservations are highly recommended. Next door to Miracle Beach is sandy Saratoga Beach. With its many resorts and campgrounds, Saratoga Beach is a good alternative if Miracle Beach is full.
Miracle Beach Provincial Park (137 hectares) is located 14 miles (22 km) north of Courtenay and 14 miles (22 km) south of Campbell River, 2 km from Island Highway 19 on a paved access road.
